We recently took a trip that took us over Glen Canyon Dam. In preparation for the trip, we checked out books from the library about dams and tried to build one of our own at the park.
The first attempt was unsuccessful.
After our trip, we took dad to the park. I knew we needed his engineering mind to help us with this one. So, he and the three year old built a dam out of sand, water, and leaves. They mixed it in a big bucket and then poured it into a smaller bucket three times, each time then dumping it out on the slide in a straight row. The rest of the mud, they poured around and over that. Then they filled up the water jug with water from the drinking fountain and made a little lake. It totally worked!
It was fun.
