I love sensory play, what some people think of as messy play, for kids. They can play for hours creating, planning, socializing, problem solving, and using and developing so many other skills. Sensory play engages many of their senses, inviting them to learn more and more about the world around them. There are many approaches we can take and many ways we can introduce sensory activities to our toddlers and preschoolers. In addition to the benefits of each sensory activity alone, they can also be used as extension activities for many content areas or themes. For example, they can practice drawing letters in corn meal or make different size shapes out of play dough.
