Literacy Learning
"Learning is not attained by chance. It must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence."
Experience Books
Experience books are a wonderful way to take an experience that was meaningful to the child and put it into a book. This activity has several benefits. It takes something meaningful for the child that they have an emotional connection to and helps them put that into text. It's something they can read over and over again, helping them to develop an emotional connection to books, helping to develop the language associated with the experience and helping them learn to recognize print as meaningful. Older children can write the books themselves helping them to develop writing skills. And it's a good way to keep little journals about their experiences that they can treasure forever.
Tractors
This happened one day by chance. We walked outside and saw these men working to repave the road in our apartment complex. Andrew watched them for hours over a period of days and then acted out what he saw in his play.
We took pictures and made a book about it. We used plain manila paper and put it in a folder we bought at Wal-Mart. He placed the pictures in order and told me what to write so the book is in his own words and it's his experience. He still loves to look at it every once in a while and this was a year ago.

The Duck That Took My Cheese
Here was another one: We wrote this one day after a trip to the zoo. Andrew was eating cheese and he put his hand down. A brave duck took that opportunity to jump right in and grab it out of his hand. He was just a little guy and it scared him, so we wrote a book about it. There were no pictures this time, so I had him "draw" pictures of the event.
We used plain colored printer paper for this book.

His own words: The duck wanted my cheese. He did try and take the cheese out of your hands.
After I felt scared. Mom gave me huggies and snuggies. After mom gave me huggies, I felt better.
When I went to the zoo with mom, the duck did bite me. After the duck bit me, I felt scared.
